The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) is an American nonprofit fitness certification, education and training provider with more than 100,000 members. Founded in 1987, The National Academy of Sport Medicine (NASM) is a nonprofit organization committed to improving and enriching the quality of life through safe and effective exercise and physical activity. NASM's mission is to protect all segments of society against ineffective fitness products, programs and trends through independent, third-party research, education and outreach. NASM's national headquarters is located in Chandler, Arizona.

History

Chartered in 1987, NASM has over a hundred thousand members in over eighty countries around the world. Its headquarters is in Chandler, Arizona. The original founder was Dr. Robert Goldman.

Purpose

The NASM provides resources, technical assistance, opportunities for professional development, information, to health and fitness practitioners. NASM members attend and conduct health and fitness conferences that provide networking opportunities, discussion, review and formation of the Association's certification requirements.

Accreditation

NASM is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agency (NCCA). In addition, the organization is registered with the Better Business Bureau and has been awarded the highest company rating of A+.

Educational partnerships

Numerous academic institutions have incorporated NASM's fitness curriculum as part of exercise science courses and degree programs.

Successful completion of the National Personal Training Institute program allows the graduate to be eligible to take the NASM Certification examination. In addition Life Time Fitness has established an academic partnership with NASM as well.

Veterans and military

Since 2010 of GI Jobs' has listed NASM as a Military Friendly School. In addition, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs has a program to reimburse qualifying veterans for the costs of them to take the CPT Examination.

Professional certifications

Launched in 1987, NASM's first certification was the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT). It has since become a de facto standard certification, in personal training. The designation certifies that individuals have demonstrated competency, knowledge, skills, and abilities in the blended discipline of health, fitness, and nutrition. In addition, NASM offers a number of additional specialization certifications.

NASM later introduced many other specialization certifications. To initially obtain a NASM certification, candidates must first document that they have met required education and experience requirements. They must then pass an examination consisting of multiple choice questions. To maintain most NASM certifications, holders must earn Continuing Education Units (CEU), which can be earned in a variety of ways. Most credentials must be renewed every two years.

Leadership

NASM's current Chief Executive Officer is Dr. Micheal Clark. Dr. Clark joined NASM as a partner in 2000, and is recognized as the creator of the Optimum Performance Training (OPT) Model method used by health and fitness professionals worldwide. In addition, Dr. Clark also serves as the physical therapist for the Phoenix Suns which is a team in the National Basketball Association.
